History of Proell KG

In the Beginning, There Was Ink

In 1938, the chemical engineer, Hermann Pröll, established the first European plant specialized in producing screen printing inks in Nuremberg, Germany. This young enterprise was based on the inventive spirit of its founder, who even had ideas for new areas of application for solvent-based lacquers in the 1920’s. However, his research was focused on developing inks for screen printing technology. After the beginning of WW II, the existence of the company was threatened by a lack of raw materials and labor. The production facilities of Proell were destroyed by the devastating air attacks on Nuremberg. Not allowing himself to be discouraged, Hermann Proell resumed production activities in 1943. Using what little equipment he could salvage, he set up temporary operations in an old mill near Treuchtlingen.

The first new production facilities were built in Moehren, near Treuchtlingen, in 1945, just after the end of the war. Shortly thereafter, Hermann Proell decided his company should specialize in developing and producing screen printing inks in the future. During the difficult years in the beginning, new products for screen printing were conceived, and business activities were gradually broadened. The basis for this upturn was the high level of quality and the start of the export trend, initially directed at other countries within Europe.

New Focus of the Company

Herman Pröll withdrew from active business life in 1963, but entrusted the firm to capable hands. In the years which followed, production and worldwide export were increased through energy and hard work. The invention of water-based screen printing inks, the launch of UV and pad printing ink systems, and the expansion of the solvent-based ink system range are but a few of the milestones achieved by Proell in the area of R&D. The growth of the company soon made greater operating facilities necessary. In 1983, production was transferred to a newly constructed plant in Weissenburg/Bavaria. The new research laboratory and commercial administration center were erected at the same location in 1987.

At home and abroad, the sales and distribution of Proell products are guaranteed through contact to established trading enterprises specialized in screen printing. This contact has resulted from decades of successful business relations. To strengthen its direct contact to customers, the firm has also set up its own sales and service centers. Founded in 1994, Proell Services GmbH in Weissenburg/Bavaria, with its branch in Leipzig, is a development of Proell KG’s Leipzig subsidiary established in 1989. This customer oriented initiative was later broadened by opening further branches in Hildesheim, Haan, near Duesseldorf, and Munich.

Proell has been active in the USA since 1995. In 1998, Proell, Inc. located its headquarters in St. Charles, Illinois, supplying the North and South American markets with custom products plus screen and pad printing inks from its service center and central warehouse.
In 2005 the Proell Ink Shanghai Representative Office was first opened in China. Well educated, native speaking printing specialists and chemists are available for the technical customer support. In the People's Republic of China and Japan, optimal market and customer support are assured by well known trading partners.
